For any type of company the question is not whether or not to go to the Cloud, but when and how.
There is a mess of a thousand demons when someone searches for information about the Cloud on the Internet. Anyone is overwhelmed and ends up closing the browser with a much greater confusion than when it started.
confusion about the cloud
Deception and Messaging by Google
Most users or businesses are looking for some functionality or service in the Cloud, as soon as Google searches start, they are overwhelmed by results related to Cloud providers.
To this also, it is necessary to add those applications that, not being really of the Cloud, are using the word Cloud for commercial purposes, in many cases an old application to which they incorporate a web of little utility.
Sometimes the user just wants to know what the Cloud is, what it is for, or what services it has, but in the end it is almost impossible to reach a coherent conclusion.
Why does this happen?
Sometimes I think that one day I will go to the supermarket and the chickens will have a tag that will put “Cloud Computing”.
Many software companies and even hardware that had been shifting to the Cloud, now want to present themselves as cloud companies. There is a desperate struggle to be more “Cloud Computing” than the competition.
This has a real and tangible motive, the customer demands services and applications in the Cloud.
Although it is not clear what all this is, in the collective imagination has already permeated the idea that the Cloud means at least ubiquity. People want to have their files and data available all the time and accessible through their mobile devices. To this, now it is also added and begins to penetrate the idea of security. Especially in SMEs, the concept of cloud providers is already extended and has much higher security means and measures than those of its IT department.
As for ubiquity, the evolution is very palpable. One data, while in year 216 the access from our web application was made in 50% by PC and another 50% by mobile devices. Today, access through mobile devices is 80%. That is why we have improved and updated it twice in this period.
After the last massive Ransomware attack that left many companies out of business, it is clear that it is not such a bad idea to delegate the custody of data to an external vendor. Those companies that had outsourced certain services to the Cloud had no problems because these services were simply out of their network.
For those who still have conceptual doubts, a simple example to understand this would be: if you save a file in the “my documents” folder of your computer, you can only access it, through that computer, and therefore if it is infected for a virus, the file will also. Instead, if that same file is saved in the cloud, it will be stored on an external server, and you can access it from any location and device, it is somewhere else.
to think about the cloud
That employees of the IT department want to keep their jobs will not prevent the company sooner or later move the servers to the Cloud. The media already exist, that Oracle database server that maintains the computer department and that due to the Ransomware attack left inoperative the company can already be transferred to the Cloud, of course, to the same Oracle Cloud and make it immune to these catastrophic incidents. Sooner or later the bosses will find out about this. Instead of opposing evolution I think it is better to adapt to change, it is also a law of nature.
Add to this that an IT employee should not fear for their work with the arrival of the Cloud. Work will always have within the company. What happens is that you can now devote more time to other tasks and develop or improve other aspects of your company’s operations. The supervision of the Cloud systems, the integration and the new services that are going to create, justify a professional recycling that has to start from now on. History repeats itself over and over again, just as bookkeepers abandoned their ledgers and started using Excel, now IT staff must keep abreast of the changes the Cloud revolution is giving rise to and applying.
So what are two ways to go to the Cloud for business?
The first advice is to forget the acronyms like PaaaS, Saas or commercial phrases like Cloud Hybrid, Private Cloud and blah, blah, blah.
I’ll tell you a secret: Computer users, commercials and large software companies love to use acronyms and enter words into English within Spanish phrases, this is a sales strategy within the many that are handled. While in the field of scientific dissemination editors strive not to use technical words, in the world of computing is just the opposite. The technique is to overwhelm the listener by using terms that the other does not know. Once they have released several acronyms and a good amount of English words have already convinced you of your ignorance. It tells you a person who can write this article with total fluency in English but as you will observe in this Blog do not use pedanterías of this type, it is an attempt to be didactic.
To the point, for a company there are two fundamental ways to go to the Cloud:
Bringing your servers to the Cloud.
Hiring cloud services for certain tasks or needs.
Bringing Servers to the Cloud
In this there is a great offer. The need to take servers to the cloud comes when you have specific software developed exclusively for the company. It is about removing the local pots (servers) and placing these in Cloud. Something quite advantageous since at a single blow you eliminate many costs of maintenance, security, updates, etc.
Today, we can say that the company that does not have in the first line of its plan for the cloud computing department its servers are at risk of:
Endanger your data and those of your customers and therefore the continuity of the company itself.
Comply with data protection laws. In 80% of cases the facilities themselves do not comply.
Not be able to modulate their computing needs in terms of resources and peaks in computing needs. The cloud is flexible and adapts to your business according to your needs.
Assume maintenance and security tasks that are very long for their computer personnel (Recall the last incidents).
Use existing services in the cloud
Companies can search and contract “turnkey” services. They do not need to know anything about computers because they are complete services offered from the web. In most cases companies can move their software to the cloud and leave their local servers to play solitaire or turn them off.
Fortunately more and more services of this type appear every day despite competing with US companies that do not comply with the regulations. A year ago we published an article of providers of this type of Spanish services: List of Spanish Cloud Computing Solutions for SMEs
What you find when you are looking for “Cloud” or “Cloud” on Google
As we have explained, most of the results that the search engine shows are cloud providers for servers. It is about moving the office pots to a supplier. If you now have a stable with two cows, you close it and you take the cows to a bigger stable where they will feed them, they will take care of them and they will take care of them. Let’s say that the supply of stables is very broad and in general quality.
In the existing Cloud services are not cows, they are for those who finally think and come to the conclusion that what they want is milk. If you only want milk to buy a cow? Those are the services that are hidden behind the tangle of results offered by search engines. Our service is one of them and allows companies to dispense with their servers dedicated to document management, ie storage and management of files in the company.
There are also advanced vendors such as Oracle, Azure or IBM Blue Mix where besides taking care of the “cow” they provide a multitude of aggregated services. Services oriented to the programming of new functionalities that will never be available to the companies that have the servers at home.
